INGREDIENTS:
100% MALTED BARLEY
METHOD & MATURATION:
Traditional double distillation, stored in mainly French oak barrels.

Dark amber.

Nose

Sugary sweet sherry notes. Hints of something sour or bitter - is this the kveik influence - I believe it is. Then warm and inviting sweetness. Almost a little bourbon like on the nose.

Taste

Full bodied. Again rather sweet sherry notes. Creamy vanilla, earthy cinnamon. Malty with tropical fruits in the background.

Finish

Medium long finish. Hints of oakiness now. Not a whole lot of development.

“Well, I like it! Score 84/100”

“Love this whole experimental series. I was a little surprised that Jon Bertelsen (the master distiller at Det Norske Brenneri) chose to use small sherry casks that are this active. To me they seem to mask some of the influences of the malt and the kveik that Jon really wanted to showcase. I am sure he has a plan, so we shall just have to wait and see what happens next year!”

Nose
A delightful maltiness greets the nose. Rich, creamy and aromatic. Soft spices and hints of orchard fruits.

Taste
Rich and creamy mouthfeel as well. White pepper, malt and a soft fruitiness.

Finish
Medium to short finish. A peppery richness that fades out to a finale of mint, apples and barley.

“Well, here is a unique and very interesting product. The Eiktyrne Kveik og Malt is basically newmake or moonshine if you will, brought down to 55 % ABV. It is made using Norwegian malt from Furnes, and fermented using kveik at the brewery Eik og Tid for the distillery Det Norske Brenneri. This is exciting! Score 83/100”

The name Quadruple does not indicate quadruple distilled but rather that is has been matured in four different cask types. The cask types used this time around are American virgin oak (225 L), Bloodtub Oloroso cask (40 L), ex-brandy cask (300 L), and finally Jerez de la Frontera PX butt (500 L). The difference from batch I is the type of PX cask, as the batch I used a PX cask from Montilla-Moriles.

Nose
Christmas cake, dried fruits, homemade caramel pudding with real™ caramel sauce. This might all seem a bit dark and heavy, but it really is not. You see it is balanced with a layer of lighter notes, including vanilla, rowan berry and raw nuts.

Taste
Smooth-ish mouthfeel, it does have a little roughness to it, but still well on the side of pleasant. Very nutty and relatively sweet. I find the same homemade caramel pudding with sauce here, as well as the dried fruits. baked apples covered in rich honey.

Finish
Medium long finish. The sweetness grows heavier and thicker now. More honey, mixed with dark chocolate rather than caramel. Still very nutty - unsalted peanuts primarily, but also chopped almonds.

“By far the best Norwegian single malt whisky released to date. I certainly do like the direction this is taking. Score (87/100)”
