Kveik og Malt 12

12 måneder
LAUNCH DATE
September 19, 2021
ABV:
49.2 %
CL:
50 CL
VOLUME
98 BOTTLES
CASK:
Only 50 litres from the vatting of those 7 casks are used for this bottling. The remains of the vatting was blended with the contents of 2x 225 litre fresh Sauternes casks, and put back into the 7x 40 litre (now 2nd fill) ex-Ooloroso casks and the 2x 225 litre ex-Sauternes casks.
INGREDIENTS:
100% MALTED BARLEY
METHOD & MATURATION:
Traditional double distillation, stored in mainly French oak barrels.
COLOR:
Dark amber.

Nose

Sugary sweet sherry notes. Hints of something sour or bitter - is this the kveik influence - I believe it is. Then warm and inviting sweetness. Almost a little bourbon like on the nose.

Taste

Full bodied. Again rather sweet sherry notes. Creamy vanilla, earthy cinnamon. Malty with tropical fruits in the background.

Finish

Medium long finish. Hints of oakiness now. Not a whole lot of development.

“Love this whole experimental series. I was a little surprised that Jon Bertelsen (the master distiller at Det Norske Brenneri) chose to use small sherry casks that are this active. To me they seem to mask some of the influences of the malt and the kveik that Jon really wanted to showcase. I am sure he has a plan, so we shall just have to wait and see what happens next year!”

“Well, here is a unique and very interesting product. The Eiktyrne Kveik og Malt is basically newmake or moonshine if you will, brought down to 55 % ABV. It is made using Norwegian malt from Furnes, and fermented using kveik at the brewery Eik og Tid for the distillery Det Norske Brenneri. This is exciting! Score 83/100”

Nose
Christmas cake, dried fruits, homemade caramel pudding with real™ caramel sauce. This might all seem a bit dark and heavy, but it really is not. You see it is balanced with a layer of lighter notes, including vanilla, rowan berry and raw nuts.

Taste
Smooth-ish mouthfeel, it does have a little roughness to it, but still well on the side of pleasant. Very nutty and relatively sweet. I find the same homemade caramel pudding with sauce here, as well as the dried fruits. baked apples covered in rich honey.

Finish
Medium long finish. The sweetness grows heavier and thicker now. More honey, mixed with dark chocolate rather than caramel. Still very nutty - unsalted peanuts primarily, but also chopped almonds.

COLOR:

Nose
Sweet, red berries and grape juice. Dirt track through an Autumn wood, wet leaves and the smell of the air just as a heavy rainfall is about to start. Deep cinnamon notes - think raw cinnamon sticks. Hints of licorice. Leave it in the glass and it will turn absolutely divine. The comforting warmth of the cinnamon stick bonfire is soo good.

Taste
Rich and full-bodied and somehow both oily and tending towards dry at the same time. The cinnamon sticks are still with us. White pepper, ginger, licorice and just a little more than just a touch of chili. Caramel and vanilla.

Finish
Medium finish. Chili, milk chocolate. Soothing green notes as well now - mint, grass and tomato plant. Golden syrup and soft oakiness.

“Needless to say, perhaps, but this whisky was never officially released. With this few bottles they decided to keep this for special tastings and to present something unique at Norwegian whisky festivals. As it is it adds to the recent streak of very fine efforts from Det Norske Brenneri, and shows that Norway is becoming a force to reckon with on the Nordic whisky scene.

Nose
Soft and delicate sherry nose. There is a soft rubbery note at first, but it is mild and does crawl into hiding after a few minutes in the glass. What is a lot more noticeable is a lovely mix of spices; cinnamon, cardamom, white pepper and nutmeg. Accompanying the spices I also find malt, nuts, oranges and hints of oak. Leaving it in the glass for a while opens it up further. It is quite rich and full. Well integrated, and it feels mature despite its young age.

Taste
Full bodied and sweet. The sherry influence is immediate here, as it was on the nose. Rather peppery on the delivery. Digging a bit deeper I pick up on something floral, with a hint of vegetables. The sweetness is a mix of dried fruits, fresh apples and sugar.

Finish
Full and rich on the finish as well. Medium long and warm. Cinnamon, white pepper, dark chocolate, caramel, nut shells and oak. It becomes dry towards the end, but at the same time it is mouth-watering.

Taste
Rich and full-bodied. A slightly dry mouthfeel. The palate is as advertised - sweetness, spices and oak. The oakiness is soft though, no aggressive notes here. Honey, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, white pepper and dark chocolate.

Finish
Medium long finish. The honey, nougat and dry-ish spiciness lead us all the way home. The chocolate notes now remind me more of milk chocolate. The landing is very smooth and appealing. It leaves me with a good feeling.

“Fresh and oaky on the nose. It reminds me a bit about gin, actually, because I get juniper. Eucalyptus, mint and the smell of a pharmacy at first. I still get some juniper, eucalyptus and mint together with pineapple. It changes the same way on the palate as on the nose; more warm and spicy. White pepper, licorice and cinnamon. Oily. Delightful, light and very approachable. Playful sweetness with marshmallows, icing sugar, and homemade caramel pudding. There's a hint of a bicycle tire repair kit way in the back, but it works as an added spice.

Taste
Very rich and fullbodied. Spicy and fruity in character. There is an unusually deep base of spices, way down low. Maybe more like a bass than a base. On top I find notes of assorted berries, vanilla and light caramel sauce.

Finish

Brandy Finish

Nose
Delightful, light and very approachable. Playful sweetness with marshmallows, icing sugar, and homemade caramel pudding. There's a hint of a bicycle tire repair kit way in the back, but it works as an added spice.

Taste
Very rich and fullbodied. Spicy and fruity in character. There is an unusually deep base of spices, way down low. Maybe more like a bass than a base. On top I find notes of assorted berries, vanilla and light caramel sauce.

Finish
Medium to long finish. Continues much as it started. Perhaps a little sweeter, with notes of honey now.

Nose
Loads of berries. Rowanberries, gooseberries, blackcurrant and a light wine like character. Not very sweet at all. Polish, and leather furniture. Hints of oak. With time more spicy and rich.

Taste
Medium body. Quite dry and with a tempered sweetness. Loads of spices, but hard to pinpoint in detail. With time and subsequent sips I detect licorice, white pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Finish
Medium long finish. Borderline astringent and then it lets go, and I'm left with a sweet and delicate finish with rich notes of sherry. It remains slightly bitter with notes of berries.

“I get some fruity sweetness on the nose at first. Apricot and figs. A bit dry with oak, dust and orange peel. After spending a while in my glass it becomes warm with malt and different spices. Especially cardamom and nutmeg. Smooth and spicy on the palate. Very rich, warm and fruity. Baked red apples and ripe mango. The finish is lingering. Dried apricot, burnt caramel and still spicy. Karakter: 86/100”

“I appreciate the finish on Eiktyrne Quadruple Batch II. It is long, it is complex, and the malty notes linger on my tongue for quite some time. The dried fruit notes are brief, but the delicious toffee notes leave a smile on my face, and the experience ends with a tiny sprinkle of spice. Even though the ABV is rather high in this youngster of a whisky, the alcohol is not dominating it, and I find it to be an enjoyable dram.”

Score: 88/100, which is “Good enjoyable whisky. On the buying list.””

The cask types used this time around are American virgin oak (225 L), Bloodtub Oloroso cask (40 L), ex-brandy cask (300 L), and finally Jerez de la Frontera PX butt (500 L). The difference from batch I is the type of PX cask, as the batch I used a PX cask from Montilla-Moriles.
INGREDIENTS:
100% MALTED BARLEY

Traditional double distillation. NAS.

Warm and welcoming. White pepper, black pepper, earthy vanilla and earthy cinnamon. Rich, deep and fruity sweetness. Cocoa nibs - dry, dusty, rich and decadent. Taste
Rich and full bodied mouthfeel. Creamy malt and chocolate with cherry jam. Dried fruits - mainly apricot, plums and figs. Mild spices.

Finish
Medium long finish. A fine balance between deep fruity notes and tempered spices. Vanilla and mild caramel sauce. A quartet of black pepper corns, thyme, green mint and dried ginger in theend.

Lots of black pepper and some chili. My score: nose 21 / taste 23 / finish 22 / balance 22 = 88”

“Lukt: Sødme, frukt, vanilje, plomme, sitrus, nøtter, karamell, krydder. Smak: Rund, søt, sødme, frukt, tørket frukt, plomme, sitrus, pære, krydder. Ettersmak: Veldig lang, kraftig fruktsødme, krydder, alkohol. Dette er en god whisky som har en god balanse og kompleksitet. Score: 88/100, which is “Good enjoyable whisky. On the buying list.””
